Gloria Kamanzi Uwizera is the creative director and founder of Glo creations. She realized the love and wide acceptance of African fabrics globally and decided to combine it with her love for design. Her company specializes in creating African inspired quality patterns for garments and home interiors. They design, print on textile with hand techniques, then produce beautiful textile products.
According to Gloria, she had always been passionate about drawing and coloring since she was very young. However, she didn’t quite know what to do with this talent.
When she was studying in Senegal her aunt introduced her to someone who did batik designs but she turned down the offer. She wasn’t interested. It was not until she saw a batik t-shirt design and fell in love with it that she went back to request for the contact of the batik designer she had originally turned down.
After learning how to design batik shirts, she started making and selling in church every Sunday, before she decided to take things more seriously and turn it into a full business.
It wasn’t easy for her, she was young, she was a woman and her idea was different. Nonetheless she registered her business and moved on. From starting the business on her own, Gloria has been able to employ over 13 staff, permanent and non permanent. She’s proof that if you believe it, you can achieve it.
Gloria’s advice to young entrepreneurs? “Never underestimate your gift or talent – develop it and make use of it to the fullest.”
We hope you take her advice and hopefully we can feature you also on our blog someday.
