In a hugely stupid unpopular move, Snapchat recently posted a cringe-worthy advert that referenced the assault incident that occurred between Rihanna and Chris Brown in 2009. Meant to advertise a game called, “Would You Rather?”, the ad asked users, “Would you rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown?”
But the ad was quickly pulled, immediately following public backlash and outcry from all over the world.
After the ad was pulled from the platform on Monday, Snapchat apologized in a statement that read, “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines.” However the apology came a little too late as Snapchat’s stocks dropped 4 percent, costing the app to lose about $800 million dollars.
The very same day, Rihanna took to her Instagram to express disgust at Snapchat:
“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance but I know you ain’t that dumb. You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it.”
According to reports, just a day after Rihanna called out the ad, Snapchat stocks tumbled by 4 percent, costing the app hundreds of millions of dollars and generating loads of bad PR for the Snapchat.
Do you think Snapchat should have gone ahead with that ad, and will they recover?
