Women We Love | Colonel Dr Youhanidou Wane Dia, Military Health Specialist

Dr. Colonel Dia is a military woman and gynecologist-obstetrician who leads the military health structure at Ouakam Military Hospital in Senegal.

Under her leadership, the hospital achieved a historic milestone by performing Senegal’s first successful kidney transplant. Collaborating with Turkish doctors and a team of Senegalese experts, Dr. Dia orchestrated the operation with precision, earning widespread acclaim while maintaining her modesty.

Since assuming leadership three years ago, Dr. Dia has dedicated herself to enhancing the hospital’s reputation, making it one of the nation’s finest and capable of complex procedures like the landmark kidney transplant. She attributes the success of the transplant to her team’s collaborative efforts, which have bolstered Senegal’s medical autonomy. The initial transplant patients are recovering well, showcasing the hospital’s proficiency in post-operative care.

Her commitment and excellence in healthcare also extend to her military service. She served in the Casamance region during the Mandina Mancagne rebellion, making her one of the pioneering women on the military frontlines.

Dr. Dia’s leadership in the military and medical fields affirms that women can excel in roles traditionally dominated by men. She continues to inspire and pave the way for more women in the military, demonstrating that with perseverance and determination, there are no limits to their potential achievements.
