The 2019 MAKERS Conference is a global women’s leadership event that brings together the most powerful names in business, entertainment, tech, and finance to explore ways to accelerate the makers movement with compelling videos, provocative conversations, and onstage pledges for change. This year’s speakers include Jada Pinkett Smith, Lisa Borders, Arlan Hamilton, Gloria Steinem, flight attendant activist Dusty Roads, Mars 2020 Project Engineer Lead Diana Trujillo, Terry Crews, Ciara, Joanna Barsh and more.
Model, humanitarian, feminist and women’s right advocate Jameela Jamil’s speech on raising boys was a major highlight of this year’s conference.
See below some lessons we took out from her speech.
- Tell your son vulnerability is an human quality, not a female quality. Hence, it is okay for him not to have it all together.
- Teach him to understand strong femininity; to admire a woman’s strength rather than being rattled/intimidated by it.
- Indoctrinate him with beliefs and values posterity will be grateful for long after you are gone.
- Tell him he is not entitled to respect because he is a man. Teach him to earn respect, teach him to respect women.
