Nigerian-American writer, Nnedi Okorafor, has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win the Hugo award in the novella category.
The Hugo Awards are given annually to highlight the best science fiction works of the previous year. Winners are voted for by members of the World Science Fiction Convention.
Still wondering why this is such a big deal? Winners of previous Hugo awards include, Ursula K. Le Guin and J.K Rowling. Nnedi’s novella, Binti, is a Harrypotter-esque space odyssey about a young girl faced with leaving her family and surviving the dangerous journey to her university in the galaxy.
Congratulations Nnedi, you are an inspiration to women and you are proof that we can indeed shatter several decades of barriers.
