When we think unconventional pursuits for women, one career path that easily comes to mind is disc jockeying and when we think disc jockeying in Nigeria, several names comes to mind but two stands out Dj Switch and DJ Cuppy.
Obianuju Catherine Udeh (DJ Switch) is a multi talented creative enthusiast. She writes, sings, raps and disc jockeys. When you think talent and versatility what should come to mind is DJ Switch. 34, DJ switch left a well paying job at Haliburton to explore her creative intrests. She is deeply, fiercely passionate about her craft and this can be evidenced in how dedicated she is in being the best at what she does.
She won the first ever Africa Glo X Factor in 2013 and that launched her fully into the limelight. Prior to that she entered for the Star Quest music contest in 2009 which she won alongside her team members ‘Da Pulse’. She is signed to PClassic Records and has bagged several award nominations including the City People Award for Best Female DJ and City People Entertainment Award for Most Promising Act of the Year (Female).
Ifeoluwa Otedola (DJ Cuppy) bagged a masters degree in Music Business from New York University at 24 and has since gone ahead to make a name for herself in the music industry. She released her compilation mix, ‘House of Cuppy’ in 2014, worked as resident DJ for MTV Africa, Music Awards in Durban and interned with Jay Z’s Roc Nation. DJ Cuppy was named the official DJ for the 2015 Oil Barons Charity in Dubai, and became the first African act to perform at the event. In that same year, she won NEA awards for best female DJ.
At 26, Dj Cuppy has used her creative pursuit as a disc jockey in putting Nigeria on the global landscape. Her love for African prints and her quest to see Nigeria and by extension Africa positively represented globally shines through in her craft.
She has since released her first single ‘Green Light’ in 2017 and recently released her second single titled ‘Vybe’.
