The field of innovation in technology is one that has been dominated far too long by the men folk. A few women however have proven their worth by deciding to stand out and make a difference. One of such women is Gérsia Sequeira, an indigene of Mozambique and co-founder of Instituto de Tecnologias, Inovação e Serviços – ITIS, in Maputo.
As a fresh graduate, Gérsia and a few friends noticed a gap between realistic needs of their country and theories taught in schools. Following this, they established a software development company to create innovative solutions to problems of education, entrepreneurship and e-government. Their first project, a Mozambican software for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Management Simulation, developed after many grueling nights of work was an outstanding success. Afterwards, there was no stopping them.
Among her many achievements is the award for her company ITIS as the Most Innovative Young Enterprise of 2014 in the ranking of the top 100 enterprises in Mozambique.
When asked what gives her the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur, she says “We have the opportunity to give back to society and live a meaningful life, whilst at the same time having lots of fun.”
We wish her lots of success as she continues to change the face of Africa!
