Award winning author and writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has made her entry into children’s literature with the book titled “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf”.
Chimamanda made this known via her Instagram page with the caption “So delighted to announce that I’ve written my first children’s book, Mama’s Sleeping Scarf. It is a celebration of the joy in ordinary family life. The illustrations by the immensely taletented @joelle_avelino are so beautiful, so apt. It will be published by @harpercollinsch (UK) and @aaknopf (US) on 5th September.”
The writer is seen smiling as she briefly introduces her new work to the world, she describes it to be a book that shows how “delightful the ordinary every day things can be, also stating that its based on “a day in the life of my daughter”.
According to The Bookseller, Adichie’s agent Sarah Chalfant sold the rights in a three-book deal to Ann-Janine Murtagh, executive publisher, and Nick Lake, publisher of fiction and author brands.
Murtagh praised the forthcoming children’s book and described Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as “one of the most important voices in literature today and we feel honoured to publish her first children’s book on the HarperCollins list. Mama’s Sleeping Scarf is a tender and joyful exploration of family life. Exquisitely written with compelling simplicity, this is a heartfelt homage to family love. With beautiful illustrations from Joelle Avelino, it will be a picture book treasured across the generations.”
Congolese-Angolan animator and illustrator Joelle Avelino created the book’s illustrations and Chimamanda Adichie will publish works under the pen name Nwa Grace James, which is a memorial to her mother and means “the child of Grace James.” The novel has been praised in early reviews as being “tender and cheerful.”
The publication of “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” to be done by Harper Collins comes almost a decade since her last work Americanah.
