If you need a pointer on what black magic looks like at 94, Cicely Tyson is your perfect muse. What’s interesting about Cicely is, she has been acting for over six-decade and has managed to stay consistently relevant. Now, that is what we call G.O.A.L.S Pure, solid goals. Her acting career began with the movie “Carib Gold” in 1956, from 1956 to 2019, Cicely has starred in tons of Hollywood productions including “How to get away with Murder”.
A little background on our A list Legend:
After graduating from Charles Evans High School in Manhattan in 1951, Tyson landed a position as a secretary for the American Red Cross. Unsatisfied with her job, she enrolled in the Barbara Watson Modeling School to pursue a career in modeling.
By the late 1950s, Tyson had become one of the top black models in the United States. Her face appeared on the cover of black-oriented magazines and then she further ventured into acting and won an Emmy Award in 1974.
Tyson is the recipient of three Primetime Emmy Awards, four Black Reel Awards, one Screen Actor Guild Award, one Tony Award and an honorary Academy Award. We can all agree Cicely’s awards will make an interesting walkway aesthetics?

In 1977, Tyson was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. In 1982, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award. The award is given to outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry. In 1988, she received a Candace Award for Distinguished Service from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.
Cicely was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2015. In November 2016, Tyson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States.
Up till today, this 94 year old actors resilience communicated through years of tiresless and unending excellence in the delivery of her acting is worth immortalizing. Her recent induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame had her saying:
“When I made the decision to use my career as a platform, to try to make a dent in some of these injustices that I witnessed and experienced in life, I said if I just reach one person, one person, then I will be happy…”
It’s safe to say if there is an Island in the world called ‘happiness’, Cicely will most likely own it as she hasn’t touched the life of one person, she has touched the lives of millions of men and women all over the globe.
