Empowering children through dance is Seyi Oluyole’s core purpose

You must have heard about the dance group that got Rihanna’s attention some weeks ago. Not only are these kids talented, the story of how they came to be part of The Dream Catchers Dance Academy is one that will leave you inspired.

Meet Seyi Oluyole, the 24-year old who is a writer, dance choreographer, fitness trainer and the founder of Dream Nurture Foundation, a global Christian relief NGO that is committed to bringing life and hope to children from poor communities and families.

Seyi started her foundation when she was 14 years ago after being touched by the plight of teenagers who had to drop out of school because they got pregnant. She decided to empower young children of these teenagers the best way she knew how – through dance. Not only does she empower the children through dance, the NGO provides them with shelter, food, clothing and education.

Presently, the NGO has sheltered and fully sponsored 10 children. Why did she desire to pursue such noble passion? She tells it in her own words in an interview with BBC;

Some people think I am crazy with what I do; seeing children on the street and taking care of them. I started teaching the children dance gradually and when I see that they are in love with it, I tell them that if they don’t do well in school they will not dance again, but because they want to dance, they pay attention in school…These children didn’t choose to be born poor. Lets help these children to grow to be better persons and have integrity, so that the first thing that comes to their mind is how to help others and not what to steal from others.”
